There are two major regions that the waters of the world are broken into: Neridic and Pelagic.
- Neridic waters are
coastal waters that are right off the land and are very shallow.
- Pelagic waters are
waters that are the open ocean. These waters are broken up into four
divisions, because it is so large. The first zone is the Epipelagic division.
- The Epipelagic
zone: The epipelagic division goes from the surface of the ocean to 100 or 200
meters under the surface. Fish in the Epipelagic zone use special coloration
that are used only in this division of the ocean. The colors that are able to
be seen are: red,
orange,
yellow,
green,
blue,
indigo,
and violet.
The coloration patterns used are: countershading (dark on top, light on
bottom), concealment (dermersal- looks like bottom vegetal- looks like plant),
disruptive (stripes to confuse), advertisement (brightly colored
signaling poinsonous), mimicry (brightly colored, but not poisonous), and
transparent (clear). The fish in this zone are stream-lined shaped and are
strong swimmers with air bladders. And, they have large, well developed eyes.
- The Mesopelagic
Zone: The Mesopelagic division starts at 200 meters underneath the surface, and
continues for another 800 feet until is ends at 1000 meters. The fish in this
zone are usually
black
with, or without,
silvery
sides. But, the colors that are able to be seen are:
green,
blue,
indigo,
and violet.
The main coloration pattern used in this zone is counter-illumination, or
bioluminescence. The shape of the fish is relatively elongated and laterally
compressed. These fish are moderately strong, to weak swimmers with possibly a
small airbladder. They are relatively small with very large and sensitive
eyes.

- The deep Pelagic
zone includes both the Bathyupelagic and the Abyssopelagic zones, as well.
This is from 1000 to 4000 meters under the surface of the ocean, and only
shades of red,
and black
can be seen in these depths of the ocean. And, bioluminesscence is used to
attract prey. The fish in this zone are small and gobular shaped. They have
weak and flabby muscles and no air bladder. Eyes are small, or even absent, in
these fish since you can't see anything, anyway.
- Fish in the Benthic
zone are either
black or
brown.
Very few use bioluminescence, and they have an elongated shape. These fish
have strong muscles, but no air bladder. Their bodies are relatively large,
but their eyes are small.
