Global Positioning System devices are a technology that receives signals from satellites in orbit around the earth.  They receive a signal from multiple satellites at a time and use the position information received to display the location of the user.  Follow the link below to learn more about Global Positioning Systems.  Click the back button on your browsers window when you are finished to return to this page.

As mentioned on the site linked above the position information gained from a GPS  is displayed using longitude and latitude coordinates.  Click on the link below to refresh your memory with longitude and latitude.  Select the interactive game to test your skills with reading longitude and latitude.  Then click the back button on your browser to return to this page.

You will be using a Magellan GPS 310 device like the one used in class.  Follow the steps below to collect location data for your trees.

1.  Press the power (red) button in the bottom right corner of the     device.

2.  Wait for the device to begin receiving data from at least three satellites.  This may take approximately 2-3 minutes.

3.   Move to the base of the tree that you are selecting to identify.

4.  Read the longitude and latitude data from the GPS and record on your worksheet.

5.  Remember to turn the GPS off by pressing the power button.
